Pasar Malam literally means night market or bazaar in Malay. Established in the mid-1950s, Singapore’s first ever pasar malam was held near the British military bases. It was organised by the hawkers to coincide with the workers payday.
These days, you may find pasar malam being set up whenever there is a big holiday or celebration. Most people look forward to the delicacies offered at pasar malams as these unique dishes are usually not available regularly except in speciality shops.
